In 2005, a group of physician investors decided to adapt FOIA VistA® for use by Clinics, Physician’s offices and Hospitals. A new company under the name “Kabot International” and was registered in the State of Delaware. One of the Investors Arif Toor MD with prior experience of managing a company where he had designed and supervised development of an EMR and billing system was asked to be the CEO of the company. In August 2009 the company decided to also do business as “Kabot Systems”.
During the first 20 weeks of the analysis process it was realized that the project is a daunting task not only due to the size of the VistA system but also due to the fact that VistA had been created in legacy languages, MUMPS and Delphi.
The young team that had been assembled took it as a challenge; a small group of developers created the ‘VistA Data Dictionary Browser’ and the ‘Mumps Code Analyzer’, now part of the integrated product labeled ‘SenVis Studio’. These applications actually put the company on the path to success and we were able to attract and retain people to work on the project without the need to give them rigorous training in MUMPS and Delphi.
Several members of “World VistA /Hardhats community” who saw the tools encouraged Kabot to package these for marketing to the VA. A difficult but deliberate decision was made to put the development of the Hospital application on hold and invest resources in the VA IT Automation products, along with continuing the development of an application for outpatient departments, Clinics, and Physician’s offices.
With the help of consultants who provide more information on the IT processes within the VA, Kabot team created two additional products for the VA; ‘Mynapin Enterprise’, the VA employee access and rights management system and ‘PharmaKomply’, an inspection & documentation management system for medication storage areas that fulfils the JCOAH requirements. In December 2008 Ann Arbor MI, VA facility installed Mynapin for a 6 month pilot that was latter extended to September 2009.
On the commercial side, Kabot developed new GUI based modules in the VistA/CPRS system including Registration, Scheduling, and Billing. These modules communicate with VistA/CPRS through Microsoft .Net Web Services. The product is marketed under the label ‘VistA++™ Office Edition’. A new module labeled “Kabot Chemotherapy Manager” was developed and has been added to the ‘VistA++™ Office Edition’ product suite. The development of the ‘VistA++™ Enterprise Edition’ product suite for Hospitals will resume by the end of 2009.
