VA VistA® system’s foundation consists of three major components: Kernel: Acts like a mini operating system Fileman: This is the database system for VistA RPC Broker: This is a communication protocol and medium, which enables the VistA system to have “Client/Server” extensions. MUMPS, a programming language, which is a legacy language that was common 25 to 30 years ago and has been utilized to develop Kernel, Fileman, RPC Broker, and over 100 modules in the VistA® system.

For analysis, design & development of new modules in VistA® or the maintenance of the existing modules, an in-depth knowledge of the VistA® system foundations as well as that of MUMPS language is essential.
